T he newest flatbed trailers, if spec'd properly, are more pro- ductive, require less mainte- nance, are safer and are built to last lon- ger. Aluminum alloys off er the durability of high tensile-strength steel at less than half the weight. Running gear also has made progress. Suspensions are easier to install as a module, and other improvements include better wheel seals and bearings, lighter wheel-end components, redesigned wir- ing harnesses and LED lighting. Some flatbed purchasers are willing to pay more for the protection of areas damaged by normal wear, road chemi- cals or exposure to the elements. Options include: • Hot-dipped galvanized rear frames, impact guards and other rear compo- nents designed to minimize rusting after scrapes against docks; • Hot-dipped galvanized understruc- tures, landing gear bracing and front components that are impacted during coupling and uncoupling; and • Crossmembers coated with materials such as wax that is self-healing following impact with road debris.
