They'll discover some channel changes this year. 34 Every January, I mope around the house because all the Christmas cookies are gone and there's no racing on TV. But the fact is, there's plenty of racing this time of the year. It's just that most of it is behind the scenes. The best example is the annual winter scramble by the TV networks to get ready for the upcoming season. You and I might not notice anything materially different when we tune into the Daytona 500 next month, but Fox and NASCAR have signed a new eight-year deal worth $2.4 billion. Fox and its Speed Channel will pay NASCAR 33 percent more per year – going from more than $200 million per year for this year and next to about $300 million per year from 2015 through 2022 – for the rights season.
