Visionary founder Rudolf Rychiger demonstrated a range of skills at heavy machinery manufacturer K+W. In 1918, these skills led to the design of the first coiling machine for cardboard tubes for packaging biscuits and a reel machine for round and semi-circular processed cheese boxes. His son Hans, who took over the company in 1953, focused mainly on a few specialized, complex machines, including its first filling and sealing machines for alumini- um portion packaging. Alupak sterilizable and peelable aluminium cups for long-life products such as coffee, cream, and meat products prove to be "unstoppable" success, according to the company. Third-generation Peter Rychiger took over in 1969 and in 1977 managing the company as a family-owned business prior to its acquisi- tion by Spega SA, Fribourg in 2001. Axel Förster led the company through a management buyout in 2007 and remains proprietor and managing director. The company today employs 300, mainly in Switzer- land in a facility spanning 25,063 m 2 , soon to be joined by a new production hall measuring 1,525 m 2 for the com- pany's healthcare segment to occupy in 2019. Lines include coffee and tea capsule machines with up to 12-tracks and output of 2,000 capsules per minute; diagnostic and medical technology equipment for the healthcare industry; and retortable packaging used in the food and pet food industry. The facility consolidates machine design and assembly and includes a fully auto- mated warehouse, workshop, and offices. The energy-efficient 5,000 m 2 facility permits all aspects of design and assembly to converge. The result is greater efficiency in the workshop which remains the "heart" of the factory. The company said that the new location is near many of the company's machine component suppliers. Spreafico is a global leader in the manufacture of capsule filling and packaging equipment for coffee and soluble products. In the past few years the company has expanded its sales team and now services equipment in many new regions. Learn more at: www.spreafico-srl.com Dunkin' Donuts Remodels Dunkin Brands is undertaking a $100 million remodeling and upgrade of its 9,141 US stores, now visible at 50 concept locations. New signage reads "Dunkin'," officially dropping the word donuts, a landmark dating to 1950. More than half of the investment will go toward store equipment, according to a company press release. Remodeled stores expanded their grab-and-go sections, draw additional attention to iced tea, and offer cold brew on tap and in cans. Workers donned new uniforms. "Our next generation concept store marks one of the most important moments in Dunkin' Donuts' growth as an on-the-go, beverage-led brand," said Dave Hoffmann, president of Dunkin' Donuts North American business. Donuts remain an important part of the menu but drinks generate 60% of revenue. Management intends to double its US store count, said Hoffman. That would make Dunkin' larger than Starbucks, which operates 14,300 US stores, McDonalds with 14,150, and 7-Eleven, with 8,300 US stores. Dunkin' currently operates 12,500 stores worldwide.
