Rugged fence coating is designed to withstand demanding environments PPA 571, a tough polyolefin elastomer from Plascoat Systems Ltd., is designed to offer long-term value coating for fences exposed to demanding environments. Thousands of kilometres of fencing in the U.S., UK, Middle East, Europe and Australia have been coated with PPA 571 to resist high UV, intense heat, salt, sea and desert storms, the company noted. Plascoat PPA 571 has been chosen as the coating for over 300 kilometres of fence posts that stretch across the desert of Dubai. Two lengths of two metre high fencing stretching 160 kilometres across the desert have been erected to provide protection for buried gas pipes against damage from vehicles and other passing traffic. Plascoat PPA 571 is widely specified in the Middle East due to the harsh environment where coatings have to withstand extreme fluctuations between heat and cold as well as high humidity and desert sandstorms, the company stated, adding that polyester, galvanized and PVC coatings in these conditions require frequent replacement. "Plascoat PPA 571 coated fencing in Dubai was inspected in 2009 after eight years in an environment of high temperature, UV, saltiness and abrasion from sand," said Patrick Benson, technical and marketing director. "The inspection revealed that the coating had maintained its gloss, colour and mechanical properties and is expected to outlast all alternative coatings." Live tests in the U.S. have shown that the salt spray corrosion rate and the abrasion rate of PPA 571 are half those of standard coatings and the fading rate is one-twentieth than that of PVC, he added. PPA 571 is used throughout the world for chain link, framework, ornamental and security fencing and meets the requirements of ASTM International standards for both fencing mesh (F668) and framework (F1043). "It is one of the most environmentally friendly coatings available on the market today," said Benson. "It contains no TGIC, phthalates, halogens, heavy metals, VOCs, Bisphenol A or isocyanates." Plascoat Systems Ltd. is the largest cryogenic polyolefin coating powder manufacturer in the world. Based in the United Kingdom for over 60 years, Plascoat polyolefin coatings offer durable protection of metal structures against corrosion, wear and tear and chemical attack. They offer extended lifetime duration, low environmental impact and ability to protect metal in temperatures down to -70°C. Plascoat PPA 571 is available in powder form in both electrostatic spray and fluidized bed grades.
