Introducing: Change By Kelsey Bewick The clothes: From airy silk dresses to timeless wool sweaters, the offerings at the recently opened east-side boutique, Change, are diverse. Anyone from 17 to 70 could score an outfit that fits their lifestyle, says Owner Nikki Anderson, whether theyre on the hunt for a sleek dress with skin-exposing back cutouts for a night out or a brightly colored quilted jacket and simple cotton blouses for cozy nights in. As a bonus, theyre all garments and accessories with a socially conscious twist. The story: As a sociology student, Anderson made a personal decision that would morph into a professional mission. She wanted to make more informed retail choices and along the way found fair trade clothes were a doable and fashion-forward choice. With the goal of being involved in an industry thats eco-friendly and empowering to those working in it, Anderson opened Change, a chic outlet for some of the trendiest finds in the fair trade market. The store: Though the space boasts a sophisticated feelwith polished concrete floors, well-worn wood display tables, and gallerylike clothing racksthe boutique is ultra casual, and even offers fair trade coffee daily and mimosas on Saturdays. With Anderson often around to offer style suggestions, youre likely to walk out feeling good about the changes youre initiatingboth in your wardrobe and around the world. Change is located at 1252 Williamson St., Madison or changeboutique.com. February 2013 bravamagazine.com 19
