Florida High Tech Corridor Council FROM THE PUBLISHER President Randy Berridge University Partners Dr. Tom ONeal Associate VP of Research & Commercialization University of Central Florida Dr. Paul Sanberg Senior VP for Research & Innovation President, USF Research Foundation University of South Florida Dr. Sobha Jaishankar Assistant VP of Research University of Florida F WELCOME or more than 10 years, weve documented the technology industry in Floridas High Tech Corridor through this annual publication. What weve known for many years made national news last year when a study published on technology news website Mashable.com ranked the Florida High Tech Corridor as the fourth-largest tech job hot spot in the country. While its meaningful to recognize the collective high tech talent and expertise in this region, I am especially proud to showcase the individual researchers, scientists Strategic Partners Roger Pynn President, Curley & Pynn Kerry Martin Communications Strategist, Curley & Pynn and technologists through articles in our annual magazine, florida.HIGH.TECH. Included in the pages of this edition are stories of people transforming conventional technology with innovative ideas. For starters, our Faces of Technology feature highlights 20 technology pioneers within the Corridors high tech industries. These Faces are pushing the boundaries of todays technology in simulation training, in-ground security systems and needed antibiofilm therapeutics. Since beginning to share these stories in 2008, we have Contributing Writers Kerry Martin, Vianka McConville, Julie Primrose, Roger Pynn and Ashley Tinstman reached a milestone of 100 Faces with many more to come. Not only are individuals creating the technology of tomorrow in the Corridor, but they are also turning those discoveries into successful business ventures, like those entrepreneurs who launch startups with the help of local incubators. Contributing Photographers Christeene Brinkley, Chad Byerly, Charles Hodges and Debra Neill-Mareci Our cover feature Incubating Innovation takes a look at emerging companies, as well as successful high tech firms and how incubators helped nurture their growth with strategic financial advice, marketing consulting and more. Looking back, a lot has changed since the Florida High Tech Corridor Council was conceived nearly 17 years agoas evidenced by the satellite imagery on our florida.HIGH.TECH is produced by Randall-Reilly Publishing Company, LLC, for the Florida High Tech Corridor Council. 3200 Rice Mine Road NE Tuscaloosa, AL 35405; Phone: 866.567.4633. What hasnt changed is the spirit of partnership that first inspired our regions university and industry leaders to form the Council. Inside this book, youll read about a special project underway to chronicle the history of our Corridor with interviews from the dozens of leaders who have helped grow this idea from the beginning. Too many people to name individually have played a key role in this partnership, but we hope you enjoy seeing some of the key milestones in our organizations past. As we move into the future, I look forward to the changes that lie ahead for our Florida High Tech Corridor region. I hope you enjoy florida.HIGH.TECH 2013.
