when our local Walmart donated 150 one-gallon red
and pin oaks to us. I'd been wondering, where in the
world will we put all these trees? Four children—
Timmy, Samantha, Andrew and Joshua—who were
playing in the park saw the cordoned-off trees. They
came over and asked one of the Tree Board members
what was happening and if they could help. Those four
kids planted nine trees apiece and when their moms
started calling them to come home one of the boys
said, "Mom, we're planting trees in Boulevard Park!
Can we bring some water over tomorrow for them?"
We asked the Board of Aldermen to recognize these
four as "Super Tree Planters" and presented them
with certificates, photos, and Arbor Day t-shirts. As I
congratulated Andrew, I noticed that he was so excited
the hair on his forearms was standing up. The enthusiasm of the Super Tree Planters for trees is as strong
as ever!
A very enthusiastic presenter, Rex Bastian, speaking on the benefits of proper mulch.
This year's event will be on Friday, May 17 in our
Boulevard Park. Along with the customary proclamation, plantings, and singing, we'll be showing Dr.
Seuss's "The Lorax." We're hoping to have a chainsaw
artist carve a Lorax from one of our park trees.
Crossroads Elementary "Singing Sensations" join Smokey Bear and Limby to perform the Star Spangled Banner and the Smokey the
Bear Song.
