Photo by Sarah Maughan live In the Moment with Jerilyn Geishirt When taking the stage offers a new take on life Jerilyn Geishirt kicks off her shoes and steps to the stage. It's a foreign place for a woman who spends her days in shareholder services at Madison Gas & Electric. With a deep breath, she gets comfortable at her piano. Then spotlights flash on, and Geishirt's band, formed just three days earlier, hits its first note in a performance she never fathomed being a part of. "I love and appreciate musicians, but as far as me being one? No," says Geishirt, reflecting on her weekend as a rockstar one year later. That all changed after Geishirt entered a radio contest on a whim and won a spot at Ladies Rock Camp, a weekend workshop that teaches women to play an instrument, form a band, and perform for a cheering crowd. After her time in the spotlight, Geishirt was inspired to keep it going and signed up for piano lessons. And while she confesses to choosing piano because she found it safe, Geishirt is now intent on learning drums, guitar and even vocals through future LRC endeavors. "Give it a try, see if it works…why not?" she says of her newfound philosophy. It's a fresh take on life Geishirt admits she needed.
