President's Perspective As I write this column, many of us are busy monitoring and promoting legislation that could affect our respective organizations. Our membership in MSAE affords us opportunities to build alliances and relationships in the association community that are so valuable, not only during the legislative session, but in every aspect of association management. As most of you know, I not only assumed the role of MSAE President in January, I also became the executive director of the Mississippi Municipal League when George E. Lewis made the decision to retire. George gave me many wonderful opportunities during my tenure as deputy director that prepared me for my new role, and I will always be grateful to him for his confidence in my abilities. One of the ways he helped prepare me was by encouraging me to join MSAE in 2006. I can honestly say that my involvement in MSAE has been a major factor in my readiness to take on this job. I have gained such respect and admiration from the executives of the associations represented in our group. Several times during the past few years, I have picked the phone up and called or sent a question out on the list serve regarding an issue and received immediate assistance. It was great to know that I didn't have to "re-invent the wheel" and I could learn from the experience of others. Our Mid-Year Conference is scheduled for May 8-10, 2013, at the beautiful MSU Riley Center in Meridian. It's hard to believe this conference is now in its 5th year. When the MSAE Board of Directors made the decision to implement this conference in 2008, we wanted to give our members an opportunity to come together for a time of rejuvenation and networking after what always proves to be a busy session. For me personally, I really look forward to SPRING 2013 | CONNECTIONS this conference because it is a time for our membership to visit, learn from each other, and have fun together. A new activity at last year's conference in Tunica was the addition of a service project for attendees. I credit my predecessor, Layne Bruce, with the idea of our members having the opportunity to give back to our host community. I thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Tunica Humane Society. In May, MSAE Members will have a chance to bid on original artwork donated by Meridian artists to raise money for the Boys' and Girls' Club of Lauderdale County. Please join us for "#Hashtag & Harmonies"— Chairman Larry Houchins and his team have put together a great conference. I certainly hope to see all of you there! For years our members have asked, "When are we going to hold the LSAE/MSAE Joint Conference in New Orleans?" The answer is October 14 – 16, 2013. Make plans to attend this powerful event hosted by Harrah's New Orleans. Finally, I am honored to be serving as your president. I welcome your suggestions and comments on ways MSAE can better serve you! 5
