PRESIDENT'S PERSPECTIVE P&CMA Hall of Fame "The hinge of the future is on the door of the present. Keep men of honor and integrity in places of trust and you will not fear the future." Martin De Vries Imagine if you will that it's 1949. World War II is still a fresh memory, but even so it's an exciting time. Boys, who had perhaps been turned into men a bit too early, were dreaming big dreams, moving this country and themselves forward. It was during this time that the Alabama Petroleum Association (later the Alabama Petroleum Marketers Association) came into existence. On August 19, 1949. at a meeting in downtown Montgomery "some thirty independent jobbers and distributors coming from twenty different towns and representing all but one of the nine congressional districts in the state" sat down and laid the foundation for the organization that would eventually become P&CMA. From Tom Thrasher of Huntsville, who told Shell Oil Company he had $7,000 and was "ready to go," to Henry Morgan who was always willing to try something new; these men and others who would follow - their personalities, their vision, their drive – can be described in one word….Legacy. On Friday, June 9, 2013, during our summer convention, P&CMA will begin to "Honor our Legacy" as we induct eight Charter Members into the newly formed Alabama Petroleum & Convenience Marketers Hall of Fame. Created by the P&CMA Board of Directors, the Hall of Fame is designed to recognize those association members who have gone "above and beyond" in service to the industry, the association and their individual communities. Individuals are eligible for induction into the Hall of Fame in three categories: Petroleum Marketer/C-Store Operator, Associate/Affiliate Member and Legislative. As is obvious, the first category will recognize those members who we would call "active" members of the association, the second will recognize our outstanding "associate and affiliate" members and the third category will recognize those elected and/or regulatory officials who have worked tirelessly on behalf of our industry throughout the years. 8 OIL PROPHETS SPRING 2013 Each year the Hall of Fame Committee will determine whether or not there will be new inductees into each individual category. Those selected to be inducted into the Hall of Fame will be recognized at the summer convention during the Hall of Fame Induction Banquet held the final night of the convention. Certainly, this is the most prestigious award the association can give. Alabama Petroleum & Convenience Marketing Hall of Fame Class of 2013 inductees are on the following page. When you look across the fabric of this organization, it is impossible to look at any period in time where the association, its members and our industry were not being impacted by one or more of these men. They truly served as a part of the foundation upon which the association is built. I hope you will make plans to join me and others as we "Honor our Legacy" at this year's annual convention. Not only will it be a time to remember our past, but also a time to chart the course for our future. A summary of the Convention Schedule is included in this issue of Oil Prophets. Registration materials will be out soon and rooms are limited, so sign up early. I can't wait to see you in June. Sincerely, J. Bart Fletcher, CAE President
