Doug Hair, keeping it real in the field How did you get in landscaping? I had always been interested in zoology, and when I went to college I ended up studying botany and horticulture. I put my interest in plants to work at a local landscape company during my summer job. How do you keep customers loyal to your business? I keep everything small. I'm also out in the field—I enjoy being on location and want to make sure everything is done the right way. If I'm on site, it means we won't have to have callbacks. It can be stressful because I run myself a little thin, but it's how I like to run my business. As owner of Premier Landscapes, how does Mobil Delvac™ heavy-duty diesel engine oil help you succeed? Our equipment doesn't go out every day, but when it does, we use it hard. In landscape construction, we face dirty, dusty and wet conditions on a daily basis. Having a product like Mobil Delvac, which helps protect our diesel engines, gives us peace of mind and saves us from downtime. Can you describe one of your most difficult assignments? A new restaurant was being built, and we had to build a wall very close to it. After we finished, the contractor building the restaurant got one of his pieces of construction equipment stuck between the restaurant and the new wall. We had to tear the wall down, pull out his equipment, then build the wall right back up. You better believe we made the contractor pay for it. j u n e 2 013 Untitled-2 1 TLC0613_Irrigation.indd 18 T:9.5" "almost like a flat Chinese takeout box," she says. Using similar layering techniques, the units provide a container for stone and loam that's easily assembled in place, anchored by "tails" that are buried 9 feet into the bank. A boulder base seats each unit, which is staggered back 18 inches from the one below. Rosa rugosa is planted on vertical and horizontal surfaces, eventually creating a "green wall." At the top of the bank, spruces and birches will visually anchor the house. Burdick calls this project "small but intense. There's a lot of staging and a lot of coordinating that goes along with this." In this case, landscape came before house. But Burdick has also performed rescues. In one instance, homeowners built a terrace under their seaside house, without stabilizing the shore. Burdick and her crew pulled out the wreckage and then fixed the problem. Erosion control is essential to longevity of any shoreside structure, she said. And much of Maine's shoreline is suffering. "It hasn't become a priority for some homeowners, yet, to take care of the shore," she says. "We try to work and educate clients to plan for future generations so that their kids aren't stuck with having to do this work later down the road – but also so it doesn't get worse." tlc Text info to 205-289-3796 or visit TLCrequest.com ADVERTISEMENT 5/22/13 10:31 AM This advertisement was prepared by BBDO New York CLIENT: ExxonMobil Lubricants Filename: P35406_EML_A01_V8-REV1.indd 5/23/13 2:01 PM Created: 5-21-
