Keeping up With: Velvet Waxing By Kelsey Bewick The story: The idea of getting waxed might make you squeamish, but the chic Velvet Waxing Studio, located downtown, has stripped the process down to a precise—and even relaxing—experience. Launched by three estheticians who wanted to provide a welcoming locale for everything from brow, belly, Brazilian and yes, even booty waxing, the luxurious space is a good stop when prepping your skin for summer exposure. "We wanted people to be able to come to a place that just specialized in waxing," says co-owner Tracy Ballweg. Indeed, there is comfort in working with experts. The approach: Ballweg says communication is key to calming a nervous waxer. But with discreet draping, smart body positioning, a wax catered to skin types and the bonus of a post-facial-waxing cool stone massage and powder, the experience leaves you feeling not only pretty, but also pampered. The Brazilian: Don't think you could ever survive getting a full removal down there? Ballweg says once that dreaded first strip is pulled away, many don't even wince and are often surprised at how comfortable they can be during a Brazilian or bikini wax. Having completed more than 5,000 Brazilians last year—more than half of their waxings—Velvet has plenty of experience in that area. The location: 137 W.
