SERVICE Figure 5 As you can plainly see as the flue size goes up, the percentage of over sizing does too. With an 8 inch x 8 inch clay liner, you have 42 square inches and that means you have a 350 percent oversized chimney. But with a 12 inch x 12 inch chimney, you are 850 percent oversized at 102 square inches, and except in really cold weather, that chimney's not going to be able to do much for you. It's just the math again, and it doesn't come out. Again, just my opinion, but many OEMs are still showing the 8" x 8" x 20' as gospel and that sizing is 60 years old and obsolete. By the way and like I said, installing a new gas or oil fired appliance into an unlined masonry chimney is in violation of most building codes and NFPA Standards 211 for oil and 54 and 58 for gas. You might want to think about that before your insurance agent calls.
