Scene at: 2013 1 37th annual conference and trade show draws an eastern crowd he 37th annual Wineries Unlimited Conference and Trade Show, held March 12-14, drew nearly 1,300 attendees from the East and Midwest to the Greater Richmond Convention Center in Richmond, Va., including representatives from 192 exhibiting companies. Sessions during the three-day conference covered three tracks, including enology, viticulture and marketing. Those wishing to dig deeper signed up for the "10 for 1" group consultations, in which industry experts provided individualized advice to no more than 10 attendees. New this year was the inclusion of craft brewers among those invited to visit the two-day trade show, since many suppliers service both wine and beer makers. In 2014, the event will expand to include the craft beer industry on a larger scale. The Wine & Dine Gala dinner featured a keynote address from Eric F. Trump, president of Trump Winery in Charlottesville, Va., who 94 V I N E YARD & WINERY MANAGEMENT | spoke about the triumphs and challenges of the eastern industry. "We have an incredible number of varietals that do well here – the sparkling wines are awesome, the reds are awesome and the white wines are great," Trump said. "The reality is we have to compete against giants around the world … If we're going to do that, it's going to take a constant pursuit of quality, because we have the smartest consumer that we've ever had in history right now. It's also going to take constant pursuit of branding – not just in our own labels, but for the East Coast as a region." A live auction following Trump's keynote speech, along with silent auctions held during the trade show, raised $14,500 for ASEVES scholarships, bringing the total raised since 2007 to more than $103,000. Wineries Unlimited will return to Richmond March 11-13, 2014. For ongoing updates about the sessions and speakers, visit www.wineriesunlimited.com. July - Aug 2013 2 3 w w w. v w m m e d i a . c o m
