It's the little things that can have a big impact on the bottom line and the environment, like using alternative fuels such as natural gas and biodiesels. But here's another way to protect your engines and the environment while also creating business opportunity. As an owner-operator, you can switch to using re-refined engine oil that could help keep your customers and attract new business from the growing number of companies seeking to reduce their supply chain's carbon footprint. If winning business this way sounds a little farfetched, read on for the compelling evidence. Fleets and sustainability Big business and many large fleets are greening their businesses. Why? Because being good for the environment is good for business, whether it's switching to natural gas engines or using rerefined engine oil in fleet trucks. For the owner-operator or small fleet owner, this movement toward sustainability applies coverstory 0713.indd 1 to your own world of trucking. How? Your customers and prospect may very well be interested in environmental issues like carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions. By making the environment part of your pitch, your odds of winning business improve. Customers and prospects will pick up on how you could help them reach their sustainability and environmental stewardship goals. Greener engine oil Engine oil isn't always the first place people think of as having a more environmentally-friendly option. But with rerefined engine oil, one such option now exists. It's re-refined from reclaimed oil. In fact, re-refined engine oil requires up to 85% less energy to produce than engine oil made from crude. Take the example of a fleet using a million gallons of re-refined engine oil annually. The fleet would reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by more than 7,500 metric tons per year. That's equal to growing over 198,000 trees for 10 years in an urban environment or the emissions avoided by recycling 2,681 tons of 6/6/13 10:02 AM
