live at home Restoring Brushstrokes Studio 184 paints new life into tired furniture By Cathy Martin Think of that outdated nightstand or coffee table you've had for what feels like forever, the one you're planning on giving away and replacing with a brand-new, store-bought piece. Cindy Gazso of Studio 184 invites you to reconsider. Gazso and her husband Barry opened the furniture restoration shop in Stoughton earlier this year with the goal of infusing color and texture into old furnishings. Through workshops and supplies, they'll help you transform your blandest items into unique pieces you'll see in a new light. Their signature technique involves a special paint called Chalk Paint decorative paint by Annie Sloan, which doesn't require sanding or priming and can be brushed onto surfaces as diverse as wood, plastic and metal. It even dyes fabric. "I was just so inspired by what it could do," Gazso says of why she decided to share her love for the paint with others. Gazso says recycling furniture not only makes economic and environmental sense, but the process also allows for creative expression. Gazso sees the individuality in each piece, saying its personality—whether "loud and funky" or "quiet and reserved"— dictates how it should be revamped. "Just like a person, you better appreciate where they are if you realize where they've come from," she says. 20 BRAVA Magazine July 2013 Learn the Basics Sign up for weekly introductory workshops that cover four fundamental painting techniques—turn to p. 22 for a sneak peek—and look out for new, advanced classes this summer.
