Oklahoma City, Okla. 5_fromthechairman_KP.indd 5 By Mike Quirk We talk a lot these days about the pace of our lives and how fast the weeks and months go by. It seems like just a few weeks ago we were at the AED Summit in Las Vegas kicking off the new year with lots of talk about what 2013 may or may not bring the equipment industry. Now we find ourselves already at the end of summer and if you're like me you're wondering Wow, where has the time gone? Summer is always a more hectic time. There are vacations that take us out of the picture for some quality time with our families, and to refresh from the daily pressures of balance sheets and sales performance. There are projects around the house and whether we self-perform or contract them out they all take time and energy. The lazy summer day sipping sweet tea in the shade has been more of an aspiration than a reality. I should fix that. Perhaps if I made a calendar entry for an afternoon in the hammock I would actually find the time to do it! As I approach the deadline for this column I am also preparing for the AED Foundation Summer Board Meeting in Elkhart Lake, Wis. While the AED Chairman does not have any formal duties at the meeting, I am looking forward to spending time with our Foundation Board members and staff who volunteer their time and work hard to make the Foundation so successful year after year. The Foundation Board is comprised of a diverse mix of manufacturer and sustaining members as well as leaders from our distributor ranks. Their mission is to enhance the success of AED member companies through industryspecific professional education and workforce development. The Foundation Board brings expanded background experience from academia, financial services, and the full business spectrum. They collaborate to serve the membership with broader industry resources and perspective. They serve faithfully and deserve our appreciation and support. You can learn all about the AED Foundation at www.aedfoundation.org. While you are on the site you can check out the list of 2013 Investors in the Foundation. Thank you all for your support and helping ensure a prosperous future for the Foundation and the programs they provide. As the summer season draws to a close, my routine has a tendency to really get back to business. With two-thirds of the fiscal year in the books we have a pretty good idea of how 2013 will stack up in the big scheme of things. It's still too early to focus on the finish line, but things begin to look a little clearer by this point in the race. It looks like, all things considered, 2013 will be an OK year for our members. The good news is that there is still time to make adjustments as needed to identify and capitalize on remaining opportunities. It is also a time to begin planning for the future. Soon we will be meeting with our business partners and putting together plans for 2014. One of the AED programs that I value greatly is just around the corner. The AED/Infor Executive Forum is Sept. 12-13 in Chicago. This promises to be another great program that will provide current and pertinent information in a business format that is thought-provoking and informative. The content is immediately applicable to our businesses and the networking opportunities are abundant. Many strong business relationships are fostered at this meeting, always providing a great additional benefit beyond the program itself. The AED/Infor Executive Forum is the place for you and your leadership team to get the latest information to help finish 2013 on a strong note and get the first look at the factors that will impact our business in 2014 and beyond. Hope to see you there. Mike Quirk (mquirk@wagnerequipment.com) is vice president of Operations at Wagner Equipment Co., Aurora, Colo.
