W hen it comes to protecting valuable cargo in the bed of a pickup that's used for work, play or both, nothing works like a truck cap. In this issue, we feature the newest and most innovative solutions offered by the leading manufacturers. BED SHELLS & CAPS WHAT TO LOOK FOR Decisions, decisions – they start with brand, continue with construction, and then configurations and options. Research is key; thanks to the online world, you can check out the manufacturers' offerings and options before heading to a local dealer to check them out in person. Don't make the mistake of thinking you can finalize your decisions before seeing each model in person, though. You'll be working with and using that cap for a few years, probably more – you want to be comfortable with it and be satisfied with your purchase. A truck cap is a sizeable investment as well as a personal statement about your truck. In addition, it can add real value to your truck when it comes time to sell. Notice "sell," not "trade"… in most cases adding a cap won't significantly increase a truck's trade-in value, but it will enhance the resale value if marketed commercially. TERRIFIC T THE LATEST IN CAPS A.R.E. The A.R.E. Site Commander truck cap is an all-fiberglass alternative to the traditional aluminum contractor cap that adds functionality, organization and a highquality appearance to any commercial truck fleet. This durable, lightweight cap features a reinforced roof capable of accommodating most commercial ladder racks, wide-opening rear doors designed for ease of loading and unloading full-size plywood and drywall, and a BEDSLIDE cargo tray for added storage. Three-year warranty. www.4are.com/fleet; (800) 649-4ARE SnugTop MATERIAL AND APPEARANCE The choices are aluminum or fiberglass, with advantages to both. Fiberglass caps typically have a smoother look, and add a cleaner, sexier look to most trucks. Aluminum lends a more utilitarian look and feel to the cap and also to the truck. In the past, there were more defined lines drawn: i.e., fiberglass caps were for sportsmen; aluminum for commercial work. Today, the lines are blurred. In most cases, fiberglass caps have less in the way of corners and edges; aluminum caps have a boxier look. CONSTRUCTION AND QUALITY With aluminum caps, it's all about material thickness, welds, and fasteners. Again, checking out the construction in person is the only way to gauge quality. Century Century's DCU line offers a lightweight solution for contractors needing versatility in a truck cap. Century DCU caps can be optimized with a variety of tool box, door lock, storage, and racking options. Customizable door and window configurations are also available. Varying cap height and shape specifications allow for the right cap for the job. The Century DCU line boasts heavy-duty construction with .030-mil aluminum skins and .080-mil base rails. www.centurycaps.com Snugtop's Hi-Liner is a popular choice for truck owners needing increased cargo capacity. With the recent upgrades including increased shell capacity and enlarged, all-glass rear window, Hi-Liner owners will enjoy additional space for cargo as well as an expanded plane of view for peace of mind when driving. Aluminum-framed side windows easily slide open to provide ventilation. Snugtop's EZ Open lock fits flush with the door and pops the tailgate open when the key is inserted and turned. Keyless remote is an available option. www.snugtop.com; (800) SNUGTOP (768-4867) 16 PROPICKUP Big Book 2013 ProPickup_2013BB_Bed Shells.indd 16 8/6/13 9:35 AM
