Special Report makes sense in your particular situation. Ultimately, oil sample analysis trending can help spread the time between oil changes, which can decrease overall maintenance costs. Collecting and analyzing the data Now that we have discussed what predictive maintenance is, why it is important, and how to build a solid program, we need to address one more issue: Who collects and analyzes the data? Basically, you have two options. Your first option is to internally identify personnel who have the ability and acumen to manage your reliability program. You'll need to purchase monitoring equipment and train your personnel how to safely and accurately use that equipment. You'll also need to install software that enables them to download and trend data. Finally, your personnel will need to understand how to effectively analyze the data and determine the priority of each fault detected. During the course of these periodic audits, you will find some faults that require immediate attention and others that require follow-up monitoring to determine the rate at which the fault is degrading. This option makes sense for companies with multiple operations that have the capital to purchase the equipment needed. The other option is to hire a contractor. There are a plethora of companies to choose from that are accredited, reliable, and good at what they do. They can be tasked to set up your program, collect data during scheduled audits, analyze the data, and report their findings. This option may be better for those firms not in a position to finance the front-loaded costs of setting up a program. Just do it! We have initially, but thoroughly, discussed predictive maintenance and, hopefully, given you much to consider. Whether you already have an established program, have one in its early stages of development, or simply need to begin using predictive maintenance tenets and tools, it is important to remember that it is impossible to have a world-class maintenance program without predictive maintenance. By committing to a predictive maintenance program, you will improve plant performance, and thereby decrease your unit cost per ton.
