Muffuletta & Widmer Pitch Black IPA This August marks the 8 year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina wreaking havoc on New Orleans. Lucky for us visitors, the community has persevered and rose above the destruction. Through it all, the spectacular food scene has continued to define this great city. And this month I'm featuring one of NOLA's best, the quintessential muffuletta sandwich. The muffuletta sandwich at Merchant is piled high with mortadella sausage, soppressata salami, smoked ham, provolone cheese and topped with the delectable olive and veggie tapenade. The intense flavors of the sandwich were matched with Widmer's Pitch Black IPA. The gentle malt flavor and citrus hop notes were not lost or taken over by the salty cured meats or pickled vegetables in the sandwich. The smokiness in the beer greatly complimented the smoke cured flavors in the meat. This Farm-to-Table, Best of Madison spot, has proven its place in the Madison food scene.
