38 www.bigrigowner.com SEPTEMBER 2013 from AMG's quest "to create one of the most purist examples of driving performance ever produced." Modeled from the SLS AMG GT3 customer sport racer, which scored 43 victories and 9 titles in global competition during the 2012 campaign, the Black Series models are lighter, quicker and much more ferocious than the standard edition SLS-AMG. supercars 0913.indd 2 The Supercar Chronicles AMG eliminated 150 lbs from the "Black Series" (3,417 lb curb weight) by replacing the standard aluminum body panels, parts of the space frame and the driveshaft with carbon fiber. Applied new forged, 10-spoke wheels, replaced the steel exhaust with one constructed of titanium and substituted the conventional starter battery with a lighter lithium ion battery. The 6.2L V8 produces 622 hp (+39hp over base), redlines at 8,000 rpm's (+800 rpm over base) and produces 468 lb-ft of torque. Zero to 60mph is achieved in 3.6 seconds and it runs the quarter mile in 11.6 seconds at 126mph. On the downside, the car's top speed is electronically limited to 196 mph. With a base price of $192,000 before dealer mark-up, Mercedes-Benz should have car aficionados (with deep pockets) lined up to purchase the meanest car ever to leave Germany. • 8/7/13 11:55 AM
