iG1308--proof2 8/27/13 1:55 PM Page 1 THE ALBERTA FLOODS COMPILED BY iG EDITORS AND STAFF They Said It IMAGE COURTESY ALBERTA GOLF - Alberta Golf Executive Director Brent Ellenton who spent plenty of time on the phone calling courses impacted by the flooding commenting on the reaction of those at affected golf courses . "I will be donating $1000 for every birdie I make this weekend and $2500 for every eagle to support the relief efforts in Alberta." - Canadian PGA TOUR Player Graham DeLaet the 21st of June via Twitter DeLaet would have the words "For Alberta" written on his cap that Sunday and as three companies / organizations stepped forward to match his total, $36,000 was raised for Canadian Red Cross. DeLaet finished with three birdies on Sunday and nine for the weekend. "It breaks my heart to see the flooding images of Calgary and Southern Alberta," said DeLaet later. "I wanted to show my support and do what I could to help. It is also amazing to have the PGA TOUR Canada, ATB Financial and (Saskatoon businessman) David Dube join me in the fund raising effort. Alberta is strong and will recover. Hopefully it puts a small dent in what they need... our hearts are still with them." "When I came in Friday morning around 4:45 a.m., I thought, `What happened here?' By that point, we had six to seven feet of water in the basement, so there was nothing we could do..." - Cottonwood's Executive Professional and GM Tiffany Gordon in a blog on www.golfnewsno.ca. In a later blog, she would go on to say, "... I work for an owner who is so strong. Lyle Edwards was on the end of a shovel Sunday pushing silt. The last thing he said to me Sunday before he left was, `Don't worry kid, we'll get through it'." "We are definitely applying, as we should fit the revised model. We have met directly with Minister Horner, Fraser and Ken Kobly, President and CEO of Alberta Chamber of Commerce this week. Ken specifically mentioned golf courses which to me spoke to the work of Maurice and this group, our voice has been heard. I have more faith in flood mitigation and provincial funding support than I did before our meeting. That is for sure." - Chad Thomlinson, General Manager at the Highwood Golf and Country Club, which was one of the hardest hit clubs, quoted in a press release sent out by NAGA Alberta, who has quarterbacked the thrust to ensure golf courses are included in the reparation process. 47 IMAGE COURTESY COTTONWOOD IMAGE CREDIT AP/FRED BECKHAM clean and ready for action. We are hosting a meeting group tomorrow and then hopefully our first function and open the restaurant next weekend. There are a few critical things to get repaired in the next few days to make this happen, but we have goals and we intend to achieve them. See you soon, Chad July 10 Beautiful morning out here today. Working on clearing green surrounds today. Shovel, scoop up and then hose off... Won't likely get the Foxes Den Restaurant up and running for the weekend, still some hope but not much. Will likely be early next week. Everything seems to take forever to get done these days, not for a lack of trying or hard work by anyone, just so much to do. July 12 Another good day at the Club. Making progress moving some silt off fairways. Over 100 volunteers again today awesome work. Team Delivergood, Nexen, Mitcham all helping out along with many others from Calgary, Edmonton, Australia, Strathmore and elsewhere to reclaim our course. Still looking for volunteers tomorrow and then again on Monday. Hope you enjoy some good food and friendship this weekend! July 16 Foxes Den Restaurant will reopen tomorrow Wednesday July 17th. We will operate Wed thru Sun 11-9 for the immediate future. Our chef has put together a great menu featuring all your favourites and a few new ones...halibut tacos...sambuca prawn linguini...the best food in town is back!!! Driving Range will open with a welcome back BBQ on Saturday 1-5 - everyone welcome. July 17 It's a step in the right direction. The Foxes Den Restaurant is now OPEN. July 20 Great to see so many familiar faces at our BBQ and driving range reopening today. Was a little too hot for hitting balls for most of us but the cold beer and burgers hit the spot. Another group of volunteers today including our superstar Doreen who is 85. She didn't want to overdo it today because she is going hiking tomorrow - unbelievable! Making headway on Heritage and Mountainview nines this week. Lots of large piles out there ready for placement in low lying areas and hole perimeters. July 30 Flood was Thursday June 20th. Evacuated Property until July 1st, Canada Day. Worked on irrigation intake, pumps and clearing parking lot, clubhouse entrance and mobilizing equipment and staff for 9 days. Started mechanical work on July 10th with 5 skid steers, two hoes, a variety of dump trailers, trucks, brushes, you name it. We have had over 1300 unbelievable volunteers from all over the world, but mostly Calgary and area using squeegees, hoses, shovels, rakes and their bare hands to breathe some life back into this beautiful property THANKS! Lots of work still to come. — at Highwood Golf & Country Club. IMAGE CREDIT HIGHWOOD G&CC Continued From Previous Page "There's no moaning, there's no groaning. When people are under stress you get a real sense of who they are and the passion that comes out of people's pores that work in the industry is something which is really cool."
