education and technical assistance; an assessment of the extent, health, and function of our urban forests with the goal of updating that data on a regular basis; recommendations for enhancing active management of urban and community forests at state and local levels; enhancing the active involvement of underserved communities in urban and community forestry; and a review of urban and community forestry research and recommendations for new and expanded research efforts. NUCFAC Guides a Federal Grant Program! The Council assists the U.S. Forest Service in establishing grant categories for the Urban and Community Forestry Challenge Cost Share Program and makes recommendations on final proposals for the Forest Service to fund. The Council recommends urban and community forestry projects that have national or multi-state application and impact through the U.S. Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry Program. The Council looks for projects that are practical and will have either a quick and positive impact or a long-lasting impact on urban forestry across the country. The Action Plan! The Action Plan promotes professionalism in the tree care industry and builds awareness of the benefits of trees in our communities. The Action Plan is the voice of our industry speaking to the federal government and to the people of our nation. The grant categories help us learn about what urban and community forestry needs for its future health and growth. In the coming months, NUCFAC and U.S. Forest Service staff will be focusing efforts on enhancing the effectiveness of Council activities and increasing awareness among our constituents across the country. We look forward to enhancing our representation in advising the Secretary of Agriculture on how we can better serve all of our partners in urban and community forestry. Stay tuned for a number of enhancements that we're currently working on, including: 1. An updated and enhanced NUCFAC website 2. Increased interaction with constituencies as The Council embarks on development of the next ten-year Action Plan 3. A NUCFAC presentation and listening session at the Partners in Community Forestry Conference in Pittsburgh, PA on November 5-7, 2013. If you have any questions about NUCFAC or would like to know who your representative on The Council is, you can visit the NUCFAC web page at www.fs.fed.us/ucf/ nucfac.html.
