Machinery and manpower... that's where the members and friends of Paradise Canyon come in. Members bring in additional backhoes and bobcats while other courses send over hoses and squeegees. Thorsen states,"Our staff run the equipment during the cleanup. We removed heavy silt with bobcats (using blades and rotary brooms) and in lightly silted areas we used smaller equipment to keep the turf damage to a minimum. The key to the cleanup is plenty of bodies to operate squeegees, and hoses - pretty much all of the in play areas that were flooded were washed off." 44 WESTERN CANADA TURFGRASS ASSOCIATION "You do get more efficient," continues Fleischhauer. "We have a lot of people who are old hands at helping out and we can't thank them enough. Other courses had 45 hoses and 55 squeegees over to us in just hours. We had over 100 people who came out basically as soon as the water receded and those volunteers provided 4000 man hours of labour in just eight days." While this flood came at a huge cost across the province, there was a small positive from Paradise Canyon's perspective. Concludes Fleischhauer, "In the past we have been on our own to a degree but now with water issues starting to get the attention they deserve, we are looking forward to working together to make sure we make the best of any future situations."
