It's grown on Sardinia, Italy, a rocky, whitewashed island with salty air and warm breezes. A hearty red perfect for fall (that the rest of the world calls Grenache), Cannonau is fuller-bodied and more concentrated than other wines produced from genetically identical grapes. Dr. Oz—the cardiothoracic surgeon turned author and TV personality—explains that Sardinia is among the world's Blue Zones, where the life span of the indigenous population usually exceeds 100 years. Scientists are studying the lifestyles and eating habits of these people to better understand their extended longevity. Wine, for Sardinians, is a daily part of life, consumed with most meals. As with most of Italy, Dr. Oz attributes the wine lifestyle, and particularly the healthy effects of Cannonau, as a significant contributing factor of their extended life spans and low heart disease and cancer risks. Madison is not quite the same as living on a picturesque island off of Italy, but try some Cannonau anyway and see what it does for you. Maybe you, too, could live to 100. Two favorites: Argiolas Costera ($20) and Surrau Cannonau ($16). –Karen Eigenberger, partner, STEVE'S Wine-Beer-Spirits PHOTOgraPHed bY bObbi PeTersen simPle siPs
