GO+DO gOOd eaTs Delightful, delicious, de-lovely. Cole Porter's words never sounded truer than when describing Mary White and her Honey Bee Bakery. A self-effacing small-batch artisan, White sells rustically elegant pastries and whole-wheat organic breads enriched with nuts, seeds and grains on Saturdays at the Westside Community Market and Tuesdays at the Eastside Farmers' Market. Often, she lets her hand-crafted creations speak for her: cream puffs; tarts and galettes with fresh fruit; mini quiches; empanadas; and decadent hazelnut caramel bars. White, whose baked goods are, she says, "What come from my heart and soul," has become a resource for regulars for whom she bakes cakes using natural, local, and seasonal ingredients—with home delivery included for a reasonable price. Her bread share, available through several CSA farms, features loaves dropped off while still warm. Now that's heart at its best. Look for seasonal goodies in her farmers' market cases showcasing late-season raspberries, pears and apples, and a roasted pumpkin mini tart. –Laura Kearney honeybeebakery.org 78 brava magazine | OCTOber 2013 PHOTOgraPHed bY sHanna WOlF HOneY bee bakerY bOrn and bread
