Quick Bites Washington State grape growers gather G rowers will find practical advice and tips on a host of grape production-related topics during the Washington State Grape Society's annual meeting and trade show, November 14-15. The meeting, at the Church of the Nazarene in Grandview, will cover the Affordable Care Act, how to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace, how to avoid resistance to g lyphosate herbicides, and more. Dan Newhouse, former director of the Washington State Department of Agriculture, opens the two-day meeting with a discussion on the state of Washington agriculture and insights into the inner workings of state government, funding of programs, and agriculture's role in the state economy. Trent Ball, chair of the vineyard and winery technology program at Yakima Valley Community College, will give highlights of the 2013 grape harvest and a forecast of the national juice grape supply and projected prices for the coming year. Washington State University scientist Dr. Joan Davenport will give a research update on chlorosis in juice grapes, a common disorder in Concord grapes. WSU IPM specialist Dr. Doug Walsh will report on his latest research on grape pests. WSU's AgWeatherNet director Dr. Gerrit Hoogenboom will explain how to make decisions based on weather. Dr. Troy Peters, WSU irrigation specialist, will demonstrate how to use WSU's new irrigation scheduler on mobile devices to optimize water usage. Other topics include: understanding agricultural loans and financing; WSU Extension plans; WSU's wine grape rootstock trials; storing pesticides safely on the farm, and disposal of pesticides. Cherry, pear terms open N ominations for handler positions in District 1 of the Washington Cherry Marketing Committee will be held at the Wenatchee Valley Traffic Association's annual meeting on November 13. Positions that expire on March 31 next year are those of Mike Shannon, member, and Bill Knight, alternate. The terms are two years. The Cherry Marketing Committee establishes grade, size, pack, and container regulations for fresh and sweet cherries from designated counties in the state of Washington. At the same meeting, nominations will be held for handler positions on the Fresh Pear Committee of Marketing Order No. 927, currently held by Craig Christensen with Dan Kenoyer as first alternate and Ken Jackson as second alternate. The committee is responsible for collecting assessments for research and promotion and advertising of pears sold in the domestic and export markets. The meeting begins at noon at the Washington Apple Commission's conference room in Wenatchee.
