D A T E L I N E Business Briefs The New Hampshire Liquor Commission (NHLC) recently held its first ever employee tasting and training session exclusively for New Hampshire wine and spirits, at Flag Hill Winery & Distillery. The staff training was organized because of the growing interest among consumers for local products as well as the NHLC's admitted committed to supporting the state's nascent but growing wine and spirits industry. More than 200 full and select part-time staff sampled wine, spirits, meads and ciders from New Hampshire's six top-selling manufacturers Flag Hill Winery & Distillery of Lee, Candia Vineyards of Candia, LaBelle Winery of Amherst, Farnum Hill Ciders of Lebanon, Jewell Towne Vineyards of South Hampton, and Moonlight Meadery of Londonderry. According to the NHLC, the two-day event provided each manufacturer the opportunity to speak directly with NHLC leadership and staff, and to share knowledge about their products, including the growing and production process, flavor profiles and history of the brands….Diageo Chateau & Estate Wines has added New Hampshire Liquor Commission employees at a two-day wine and spirits training session focused on New Hampshire-produced products. B R A N D Absolut Tune Goes Nationwide A bsolut is partnering with Icona Pop, the Swedish pop sensation, to mark the nationwide launch of Absolut Tune, the bubbly blend of sauvignon blanc and premium vodka. "We're thrilled to partner with Absolut Tune for our new video and single 'All Night'," said Caroline Hjelt of Icona Pop. 6 two Spanish wines to its portfolio of imports for the U.S. market: Campo Eliseo and Campo Alegre from the Toro appellation of Spain. The two wines are a joint venture between renowned consultant and winemaker Michel Rolland, his accomplished oenologist wife Dany and wellknown Bordeaux-based winemaker and global wine innovator Francois Lurton…. Italian drinks group Illva Saronno has set up its own U.S. distribution unit, Illva Saronno USA. The new unit will handle the sales and marketing of the group's Disaronno spirits brand beginning in January. The company's contract with Bacardi, in place since 1999, expires at the end of December 2013. Illva's new unit, to be headquartered in New Jersey, is retaining the existing regional distributors for the brand. The division is being headed by Brett Dunne, who joins from Southern Wine & Spirits. The change does not affect the Italian firm's Tia Maria brand, which will continue to be handled by Kobrand in the U.S…. Pernod Ricard USA and Irish Distillers held a "Housewarming" event at the famed Midleton Distillery in County Cork, Ireland, to officially welcome its new master Distiller, Brian Nation, who trained under renowned Master Distiller Barry Crockett. The company also noted that the full range of Irish whiskies produced at the distillery - Jameson, Powers, and the Single Pot Still whiskey brands, Redbreast, Green Spot, Yellow Spot and Midleton – are being released in the U.S. market….Marc Goodrich was named president of Excelsior Wine Company, which handles the U.S. distribution of Concha y Toro's Chilean portfolio plus that of Trivento, its Argentine subsidiary, together with the California labels of Little Black Dress and Five Rivers from Concha y Toro's Fetzer Vineyards operation….Wilson Daniels appointed Bob Guinn as senior vice president of sales and marketing…. Young's Market Company promoted Dan Ewer to the position of executive vice president, Corporate – Wine….Van Gogh Imports appointed Joy Suchlicki Vicente as the director of marketing. S P O T L I G H T Sake Samurai J ohn Frank, vice chairman of Sidney Frank Importing Co., has been named a 2013 "Sake Samurai" by the Sake Samurai Association, a council for the Japan Sake Brewers Association. Frank received the honor for his contribution to the understanding, appreciation and promotion of Sake during his nearly 40-year commitment to Gekkeikan's success. 10 Million Trees and Counting O ver the last five years, the Trinity Oaks wine brand has helped plant 10 million trees through its "One Bottle One Tree" tree-planting program, in partnership with the non-profit organization Trees for the Future. Trinity Oaks held a ceremonial tree planting to celebrate the 10 millionth tree milestone with Roger Trinchero, vice chairman and CEO of Trinchero Family Estates; Bob Torres, senior vp of operations; and John Leary, executive director of Trees for the Future.
