Exiting Board Members: Submitted by Amy Wilson, MSAE Executive Director When a board member's term expires, it is almost like losing a friend. As with many of your Board of Directors, it has been my experience that the MSAE board members become closer colleagues, mentors and friends. This year's members, whose terms are expiring, are no exception to this rule. In fact, they are a shining example of service to this organization and great supporters to me and our recent presidents. Dan Gleason: Dan (ie: Danny, Danno, the toast master) has served MSAE for a number of years as an Executive Board Director, but most recently as Treasurer for the association in 2012 and 2013. During his tenure as Treasurer the finances have continued to stabilize and grow and the development of Financial Policies have increased and been improved. Danny is probably most noticed for that quick and easy smile and having a sense of humor that is hard to match. But what our membership and board have come to appreciate just as much, is his commitment to do the right thing and look at most situations through a wide-scope lens. This wit and wisdom has earned him respect among his peers. Larry Houchins: One word stands out when I think of Larry's service to MSAE… COMMITMENT! Over his almost 30 years as an MSAE member, Larry has served as President and Executive Member of the Board for a number of terms. Therefore it is no wonder the nominating committee recommended his position as Vice President in 2012 – 2013. Larry has lead by example in his belief Winter 2013 | Connections that all persons should support their respective professional associations or societies with not only their membership, but with their service and regular attendance at association events. She leaves the board with the perfect example and legacy by putting the organization first when looking at the growth and integrity of MSAE. Larry's inclusive nature makes one feel honored to be in his company. Larry is an unassuming type of person who is willing to share his wealth of knowledge in running a large and leading state association, but he remains inquisitive and eager to know what other professionals are doing differently. Genuine, honest, honorable, and friend come to mind when I reflect on our time getting to know Bill over the last 5 or so years of his membership, through The Duncan Gray Center in Canton. Bill has attended our receptions and luncheons almost without fail during his membership. Over the 2 years that Bill has served as an Industry Partner Board Director, he has added an element of business expertise and guidance. He was never the one who commented often, but when he does, people listen. Bill has shared his extent of knowledge and experience that he has gained in the steel manufacturing business as President of the Palmer Cos. in Camden, TN and during his eleven year tenure with the "Gray Center." Brenda Taylor: I recall being so impressed that Brenda Taylor actually attended every educational session offered during seminars, conferences and other MSAE offerings, even if the topic did nothing to advance her own professional development. When I asked her why she not only attended, but seemed to be genuinely interested, she responded, "How else can I understand my sales market without understanding my customer and their organizations." Brenda was instrumental in helping to develop some of MSAE's first and most important policies. Therefore her election to the board a few years ago and her agreement to fill a vacant board position in 2012 and 2013 came as no surprise. Bill Horne: Charles Elliott and Judith Forshee whose terms will expire at the end of 2013 will remain on the Board of Directors as Officers after being elected at the October 16, 2013 Membership Meeting. Forshee was elected as Vice-President and Elliot as Treasurer; each to serve a twoyear term. 13
