SMA in the ABQ: Members Reflect Balloon Fiesta time • Photo by Steve Cothrel Beautiful Albuquerque, New Mexico was the site in October of the 46th annual SMA Conference and Trade Show, which proved to be an unqualified success. Brilliant fall weather, a terrific agenda, and great hospitality were the hallmarks of the event, which featured a tour of the University of New Mexico’s arbo- riculture program and campus, a diverse and captivating lineup of speakers, and even a visit to Albuquerque’s signature event, the annual hot air Balloon Fiesta. Conference host, Albuquerque City Forester Nick Kuhn, his city administration, and staff had all of the pieces in place for an outstanding event. The Hyatt Regency pro- vided superb accommodations and its downtown loca- tion made touring and sightseeing easy. The conference was capped by the annual SMA Awards Banquet, where Gene Hyde passed the gavel to incoming president Doug Still, and goldenraintree (Koelreuteria paniculata) was announced 2011 Urban Tree of the Year. 6 Thanks go out to all who attended and, more specially, to all who helped make this conference another in a long line of great SMA events. —Steve Shurtz, Urban Forestry & Landscape Manager, City of Baton Rouge, Louisiana Fun Runners, go! • Photo by Paul Johnson City Trees
