Fuel-efficient loading Caterpillar rolls out its 966M, 966M XE, 972M, and 972M XE wheel loaders — all equipped with Tier 4 Final ACERT engines. The XE powertrain technology, first introduced with the 966K XE, results in 25 percent lower fuel consumption compared to machines with traditional torque converters. It also simplifies operation with a two-pedal design and provides high performance at all speeds. The slightly larger 972M XE offers a three-pass match for loading large on-highway trucks. Disc-type differential locks improve tractive ability for poor underfoot conditions. The main hydraulic valve is now a mono-block (common across all M Series models). Its design reduces the weight and has 40 percent fewer leak points. Hydraulic system components are protected by full flow and kidney-loop filtration. New hydraulic implement pumps balance hydraulic loads with the operator's desired machine performance. A new multipurpose touch screen simplifies operator interface with machine controls, rearview camera, and a fully integrated Cat Production Measurement system. The robust crushing chamber is said to provide excellent reduction ratios and high consistency of product shape. The machine features an on-board 8-foot by 4-foot single-deck screen for sizing and recirculating oversize material back to the crushing chamber. The screen can be quickly detached when not needed, while hydraulic folding of all conveyors provides rapid set-up times. An advanced electronic control system monitors and controls rotor speed and regulates the heavy-duty vibrating feeder with integrated pre-screen to maintain a consistent feed to the crusher. An optional bypass conveyor is available to divert material from the pre-screen to a stockpile. The standard hopper capacity is a substantial 3.01 cubic yards.
