ReLATe WomeN To WATch here's what some of bRAvA's former Women to Watch found inspiring about the women they nominated for this year's designation. ALL THE WOMEN we write about in this WOMAN POWeR issue have one thing in common: They are empowered. These are gals who are doing things—for the greater good, on scales large or small, or even quietly for themselves. What "empowered" means to most of us is that women take what they've got— their moxie, talents and know-how— and put it to work. They're embracing their abilities, fulfilling their potential— and are ready for more. The centerpiece of our "Empowered Women Issue" is our annual Women to Watch feature. On p. 37, we celebrate 28 inspiring women who enrich our community. They are expressive, active and smart. They are the movers and shakers you'll want to know about in the coming year. Simply put, they are the kind of gals we admire. Empowerment means embracing who you are, and working what you've got. "Shades of Gray" (p. 50) celebrates that thing which naturally happens to us all. And even if tattoos for us gals over age 30 were still gasp-worthy, the women in "Skin, Deep" (p. 54) wouldn't care. They do their own thing, express themselves in their own way and don't let raised eyebrows deter them. That is empowerment. + >GO FOR IT, GIRL! gorgeously gray, brilliantly tattooed, beauty wise >GAME ON! grow your business, roller derby +BE WELL meals to share, relaxing retreats JANUARY 2014 $3.95 BRAVAMAGAZINE.COM Women to Watch ACCOMPLISHED, ENGAGING, EMPOWERED Meet all 28, including Mary Burke, candidate for governor. bRAvA mAgAziNe | JANUARY 2014 "When I first met Kelly Jackson, I was struck by her voice, her songs and her presence.
