Meet our orthopedic physicians and learn more about joint pain, treatment options and ways to improve mobility. JAN. 28, FEB. 25 AND MARCH 25, 5:30-6:30 p.m., at Meyer Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Hospital. Want to attend? Call 269-INFO. Getting back in motion AFTER SHOULDER SURGERY As part of his regular exercise routine, Jacob Keeney was doing military presses. "I was raising my arms over my head over and over. Then I heard my right shoulder pop," explains Jacob, a college student in Liberty, Mo. For the rest of the spring semester, Jacob toughed it out and continued exercising as much as he was able. "The pain was grinding. It was painful to pick anything up," he says. "I had to depend on my left arm for everyday tasks." After returning home to Bois D'Arc for the summer, Jacob saw Dr. Shannon Woods, a family medicine physician Dr. Shannon Woods specializing in sports medicine. Dr. Woods referred Jacob to Dr. William Duncan, an orthopedic surgeon. Dr. Duncan explains that Jacob suffered Dr. William Duncan a tear of his biceps tendon, which connects the biceps muscle to the bone. 10 Shoulder surgery was scheduled, but because Jacob had surgery on that shoulder a few years ago at another hospital, surgery was more difficult and less predictable, says Dr. Duncan. During surgery, Dr. Duncan reattached Jacob's biceps tendon to a different place within his shoulder to alleviate the pain and pressure Jacob had been having before this surgery. "Everything went well with the surgery and with the help of physical therapists and Jacob's determination, he had a very good result," says Dr. Duncan. Jacob began rehabilitation at The Meyer Center for Wellness and Rehabilitation. "I started back slow trying to get my range of motion back. Then I worked on strength," says Jacob, who is now back at school studying and exercising. LISTEN TO JACOB TELL HIS STORY AT COXHEALTH.COM/JACOB.
