A2 Engine Oils (Background & Properties) 1 800 255 4417 www.castroldiesel.com/GPS Industry Specifications History The drivers for change in diesel engine oils begin with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations for exhaust gas emissions. As can be seen in the chart below, reductions in particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) have occurred every few years since 1988. To be able to meet ever tightening limits, engine manufacturers must change engine designs. Design changes almost always put additional stresses on the oil, therefore calling for new engine oil service categories. With PM and NOx now at very low levels, the next exhaust emission regulation will be for the reduction of green house gases (GHG), especially carbon dioxide (CO2). The CO2 limit will be fully implemented by 2017, and the process for developing the next generation HD engine oil for low GHG engines has begun. This new category, called PC-11, is currently being designed and tested, and will continue to evolve, with the first API license target date of January 1st 2016. FIELD TESTED. FLEET TRUSTED.
