North (and south) of northernmost Dear Good Fruit Grower: I appreciated your article on Veranda Beach vineyards. The climate is as described, warm and suitable for grapes. We own a two-acre vineyard half a mile north of Veranda Beach, technically making us the most north- erly. Planted in 2000, it has been profitable since 2004, when my doctor and buddies purchased enough to make it cash flow positive. Rockwall Cellars in Omak purchases the balance, with a friend and myself making five 30- gallon barrels of Merlot and Cab. His winemaking skills and my growing experience have combined to give us some quality wines. My main joke is that it's not a cheap hobby. I am extremely excited about Veranda Beach's commitment to making quality wine. Oroville is much overlooked as a growing district. My winemaking buddy cre- ated a 2012 Pinot from another amateur friend, which in my opinion is the best warm- weather Pinot I have tasted, as opposed to Burgundy or Oregon style. The varied terroir of Oroville-Tonasket from warm to cool may be the most unique in the state. Thanks for the article. John Biele Hi-Oasis Estate Vineyard, Oroville, Washington Dear Good Fruit Grower: I have known Don Graves and the Graves family for many years ("Most southern vine- yard in Washington State," Good Fruit Grower, February 1, 2013). They are hard-work- ing, amazing people. I have shared wine at their table, from grapes they have grown, one of the best being offered from L'Ecole No. 41, in Walla Walla, and also E.B. Foote Winery, Burien. I must say "SALUTE" to these fine folks! Elsie Melius Tygh Valley, Oregon www.goodfruit.com GOOD FRUIT GROWER MARCH 1, 2014 5 IN THE BOX Want to share your opinion?
