Problems come when people act on what they think is right. But note that I may not be the norm. I know too many hardcore techies who only speak geek and can’t speak in non-geek terms. I can’t help them. Problems don’t arise from engaging in verbal dialog by the water cooler; problems come when people act on what they think is right. That can, and often does, make things worse. I work with many users who know and under- stand technology. They have a computer at home and can install software. Some can even install new memory or hard drives. I trust them with many things, but I also get scared because they don’t know the “big picture” and don’t know when they’re in trouble. Techies have gone through many issues in their careers, and they tend to know what works and what doesn’t. They also have the smarts to stop and step back to look at potential pitfalls. If in doubt, please ask. There are a few of us who will take the time to explain things—it’s in our best interest. The old adage about teaching a man to fish holds true here. Knowledge is power, and it’s amazingly infectious. As a kid, it was always hard to raise your hand if you didn’t know how to do the math problem, but if you aren’t sure, ask. I’m sure you’ll get a resolution to your liking, and faster than you would expect. POINT. CLICK. GO DIGITAL! Subscribe to the FREE digital edition of GeoWorld today!
