22 FIRE SYSTEMS INSTALLATION www.securitysystemsnews.com FEBRUARY 2011 SECURITY SYSTEMS NEWS FireScan Healthcare gives companies ‘edge’ By Tess Nacelewicz SUWANEE, Ga.—BuildingReports, a web-based life-safety inspection reporting company, has a new inspec- tion-reporting format specifically for health care facilities. The company says its new FireScan Healthcare can give fire alarm companies a competitive “upper edge” in securing lucrative service contracts for hospital fire- safety equipment. The owner of a fire alarm company that serves major hospitals in the Boston area told Security Systems News he agrees. Jim Meehan, president of American Service, said that FireScan Healthcare is a “no-brainer.” “One of my better decisions in business was to go with them,” said Meehan, whose Quincy, Mass.-based fire and security alarm company specializes in fire alarm testing and maintenance for hospitals and com- mercial facilities. “It gave me a competitive edge.” Brett Brewster, president and COO of BuildingReports, based here, said health care facilities must provide a detailed inspection history of each piece of their life safety equipment to The Joint Commission, an inde- pendent, nonprofit organization that accredits such facilities. With FireScan Healthcare, service technicians use handheld devices to scan bar codes assigned to each of the hundreds of pieces of fire- safety equipment hospitals have, Brewster said. The information technicians collect is sent via the Internet to BuildingReports, which compiles that data into a report referencing applicable codes with which The Joint Commission has determined devices must comply, he said. SSN Rules LAST CHANCE TO REGISTER! Event starts Feb. 13th Continued from page 20 Brad Norris, CEO of Norris Inc., a New England integrator based in South Portland, Maine said he does not like all aspects of the rules, but said they’re positive overall. “I feel that rules like this improve professionalism in our industry and level the playing field as everybody is being held to the same standards while improving life safety in the buildings,” Norris told SSN. Norris and Fuller were on a subcommittee of the Maine Burglar & Fire Alarm Association that worked on the rules with the city. However, both men stressed they were giving their own opinions, not speaking for the association. Some association members have concerns about some aspects of the new requirements.
