8 NEWS www.securitysystemsnews.com MARCH 2011 SECURITY SYSTEMS NEWS Name: Ray Bernard Company name and loca- tion: Ray Bernard Consulting Services, Lake Forest, Calif. Do you have a specialty in your consulting practice? Actually three specialties: Business resilience; security convergence; and identity, cre- dential and access management (and related smart card programs). Business resilience is what security master planning has evolved to. It covers risk-based management for security, emergency prepared- ness and business continuity. There is an ASIS/ANSI standard Ray Bernard for it, which is serving as the basis for an upcoming ISO standard. It provides a framework for implementing other, more narrow standards as well that relate to the three domains (secu- rity, emergency, continuity). That is important because there is a growing body of knowledge and experience around it, providing much more effective support for sound security planning and operations than there has been in the past. The standards provide a practi- cal basis for collaboration. You just have to know what are “standards” (what to do) and not “guid- ance” (how to do it). The “how to do it part” is the body of knowledge that is developing as the standards are getting utilized internationally. More work has been done on this in Europe than in the U.S. so far. See it all. All the time. Security convergence is the name we give to the collection of things that need attention because the corporate security, IT security, physical security and IT services and planning functions have, to a great degree, been in separate func- tional silos. Compliance is often in its own silo, too. Achieving cross-functional collaboration around risk, compliance and technology doesn’t need to be as challenging as it has been, and it is amazing what kind of business benefits can be achieved when convergence is directly addressed. Identity, credential and access management is what you have to have to achieve high levels of assurance for smart cards, and to utilize them for both physi- cal and logical security. Digital certificates play a role. Even though this is an advanced technical subject, certificates are on everyone’s comput- ers—for example, built into web browsers—and people use them all the time without knowing it. That technology is starting to make its way into card access systems. Can you tell me about a project you’ve recently completed? We are currently working on several convergence projects to help corporate security and IT execute several major proj- ects while moving the organi- zational functions into a closer state of convergence. Who are the integrators you’re working with? I can’t mention the integra- tor names, but I should have also said that the integrators are getting convergence edu- cation along the way as things move forward. Most integra- tors haven’t known the luxury of working with a customer who has a long-term security strategy that includes technol- ogy, which is funded as a set of strategic initiatives accord- ing to an approved long-term roadmap.
