4 If you allow the truck to roll downhill in high gear and pick up too much speed, then you will be forced to downshift twice when you apply the brakes. Instead, try braking earlier and even out the braking using Volvo Engine Brake (VEB). Downhill 5 In some situations, such as pulling heavy loads on construction sites, you need to maintain high horsepower in order not to lose momentum. By moving the gear lever to the 'M' position you can hold your current gear. With the Premium Gear Selector you can also press the '-' button to avoid an upshift. Maintaining horsepower 3 I-Shift is designed to work most efficiently in automatic mode, the 'D' position on the gear selsctor. Through numerous sensors throughout the truck, the system can continuously monitor and calculate the most optimal gear use at any given time – far quicker than any human being. For example, if traveling downhill, I-Shift can tell from the truck's angle and increasing speed that two upshifts will be needed and will skip a gear, thus avoiding another unnecessary gear change.
