If you allow the truck to roll downhill in
high gear and pick up too much speed,
then you will be forced to downshift twice
when you apply the brakes. Instead, try
braking earlier and even out the braking
using Volvo Engine Brake (VEB).

In some situations, such as pulling heavy loads
on construction sites, you need to maintain high
horsepower in order not to lose momentum. By
moving the gear lever to the 'M' position you can
hold your current gear. With the Premium Gear
Selector you can also press the '-' button to avoid
an upshift.

I-Shift is designed to work most efficiently in automatic mode,
the 'D' position on the gear selsctor. Through numerous sensors
throughout the truck, the system can continuously monitor
and calculate the most optimal gear use at any given time – far
quicker than any human being. For example, if traveling downhill,
I-Shift can tell from the truck's angle and increasing speed that
two upshifts will be needed and will skip a gear, thus avoiding
another unnecessary gear change.
