(TXI) Webberville/Travis Texas Top crushed stone operations for 2012 Top sand and gravel operations for 2012 Top sand and gravel operators A total of 895 million short tons of construction sand and grav- el, valued at $6.2 billion, f.o.b. plant, was reported produced in the United States in 2012 by 4,129 companies with 6,598 active operations, 8,007 pits, and 87 sales and/or distribution sites. This was a slight increase of 4.0 million short tons from the production of 2011, but still nearly 40 percent less than the peak production of 1.48 billion short tons during 2006. The 10 leading states, in descending order of production, were Texas, California, Minnesota, Arizona, Michigan, Ohio, North Dakota, New York, Washington, and Colorado. Their combined output of construction sand and gravel accounted for approximately one-half of the U.S. construction sand and gravel production. The 10 leading producing companies, in descending order of tonnage in 2012, are listed below. These companies, with 543 active operations that produced rock from 556 pits, ac- counted for 20 percent of the output of construction sand and gravel in the United States. 1.
