For example, she said, an 8 a.m session on Tuesday, June 14 entitled “Emergency Message Intelligibility—A Review of Design Strategies in Achieving What is Required by Code and Standard,” might be of interest to many. She also suggested “Smoke Alarm Research and Certifications—a UL Perspective,” on Monday, June 13 from 2:45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. Pre-conference sessions, which this year run from June 10-12, have been part of the show for several years but “Boston is always a big draw for our conference attendees. It’s usually a beautiful weather time and Boston is so rich, not only in generic history, but really rich in fire history.” —Lorraine Carli, NFPA the post-conference sessions are new this year, Carli said. Lorraine Carli “If you have people making the trip we want to make sure we’re providing them with the full ranges of options for training opportunities,” she said. The seminars are longer and more in-depth than the educa- tional sessions, she said. For example, she said, with NFPA 3, “you’ll get a little flavor for it at the conference, but this will give you a whole day’s worth.” Another post-seminar will be on NFPA 101, the life safety code, which Carli said will get voted on the meeting, “so this will be a session on all the changes.” Nelligan said he will be too busy at the company’s booth to attend any educa- tional opportunities this year. Beurekjian said he plans to attend semi- nars on NFPA 72 code updates. “That’s a key one I always like to attend,” he said. He also is interested in one on emergency evacuation and smoke control. He said of the show: “No matter where it’s held, it’s always a benefit. Anybody involved in this business should make it a point to at least stop by there … You always get something out of it.” According to its website, the mission of the NFPA, an international nonprofit orga- nization established in 1896, is “to reduce the worldwide burden of fire and other haz- ards on the quality of life by providing and advocating consensus codes and standards, research, training, and education.” NFPA develops, publishes, and disseminates more than 300 consensus codes and standards intended to minimize the possibility and effects of fire and other risks.
