SPRING 2011 Planning Ahead The great American General and President Dwight Eisenhower once said, "Plans are useless, but planning is indispensible." He could've been talking about the trucking business. As we have all seen, tomorrow's plan can easily be altered by a swing in housing starts, a spike in crude prices, a new stopping distance requirement or a new emissions regulation, to name a few. But preparing for tomorrow, in all its uncertainty, is indeed indispensible. At Peterbilt, we provide the tools our customers need to manage every possibility tomorrow's events may bring, ensuring bottom-line success. For example, our new lightweight option packages can reduce tractor weight to as little as 14,200 pounds, maximizing customer payload and profit in any circumstance. Customers such as John Daniels of Long Haul Trucking (p. 6) are utiliz- ing our lightweight innovations — in a Model 386 — to carry legal payloads in excess of 50,000 lbs. Similarly, Peterbilt's aerodynamic designs and PACCAR's MX engine deliver exceptional fuel economy in a wide range of applications to help mitigate diesel fuel price volatility. In addition, many forecasts point to a looming driver shortage unlike any the industry has experienced before. Our customers are preparing for it by building their fleets with Peterbilt trucks, which are often cited by fleet owners as one of the most important driver recruit- ment and retention tools they have. Sometimes it's difficult to see around the curve in this business. One thing's for sure, though — with Peterbilt vehicles in your fleet, you'll be well prepared for whatever lies ahead or around the corner.
