the cover lens while driving, thus mini- mizing glare to oncoming traffic. "Provide the driver with consistent, high-quality lighting that reduces fatigue and aids in identifying objects on or around the road," says Sproull. "That was critically important as we created the Model 579." Ergonomic environment As important as optimizing sight- lines in the design of the Model 579 was ensuring that the ergonomic operating environment maximized driver comfort and alertness levels. "Literally, we put a driver in the driv- er's seat and built the cab around him," says Sproull of one part of the design process, in which actual drivers seated in a flexible test cab helped determine gauge and control placement. Gauges, as a result, are large and easy to read while controls are all within reach, such as the cruise and audio controls that reside on the multi-function steering wheel. Other tools, such as an active sta- bility control system that shifts power and applies braking to axles that need it most, complement a driver's own reactions. A tight turning radius also gives a driver a means to stay safely out of harm's way. Peterbilt has also engineered improvements in its grab-handle entry system and in the steps entering the cab, helping ensure safe entry and egress. The cab also features a new deck plate designed for secure egress and meets SAE and global roof crush standards in case of rollover. And an anti-blowdown hood features a locking mechanism that keeps the hood open and prevents unintentional closing. "Fleet owners told us they wanted to reduce the frequency and severity of acci- dents, and mitigate their effects and costs should they occur," says Sproull. "With the Model 579, we believe we've given them and their drivers a tool to take Class 8 vehicle safety to another level." FIRST CLASS l 17
