"We think genetic resistance is the way to go," Cantu said. "It will be the most cost-effec- tive and environmentally friendly control method for powdery mil- dew." UC Davis research is being funded by grants from the Ameri- can Vineyard Foundation. A number of PM resistant genes and markers have been identified to date from several grape species. Natural sources of PM resistance are found in Vitis rupestris and V. cinerea, and many cultivars of Mus- cadinia rotundifolia have resistance to PM and downy mildew. Complex hybrids of multiple Vitis species also demonstrate resistance. UC Davis vine germplasm acces- sions, collected along the Old Silk Road trade route in Central Asia during a 1948 expedition by the late viticulture professor Dr. Harold Olmo, include cultivated and wild V. vinifera. More than 400 of these sidered a given, all winegrowing operations have PM control in their annual business plans and budgets. BREEDING RESISTANT VINE MATERIAL Genetic research on PM resis- tance is being conducted in grape- growing regions worldwide. In the U.S., VitisGen is a five-year project based at New York's Cornell Uni- versity and funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture Spe- cialty Crops Research Initiative. It involves 25 scientists from 11 insti- tutions, including Walker. A focus of the project is to identify PM- resistant genetic markers in grape species, and evaluate the genetics of PM fungus variability in testing these PM-resistant genes. UC Davis grape geneticist Dr. Dario Cantu is building upon work begun by Walker to identify and evaluate additional sources of Dr. Dario Cantu says genetic resistance will be the most eco-friendly and cost- effective method of controlling powdery mildew. %URO-ACHINES )NC 7EST &AIRFIELD #! 0HONE %AST #ULPEPER 6! 0HONE INFO EUROMACHINESUSACOM WWWEUROMACHINESUSACOM !
