New Varieties Sysstem-CAL® ENZA to sell new pear The Velvetine pear might be licensed in other parts of the world. by Geraldine Warner The Perfect PGR Partner Apple growers need to do many things early season at the same time to ensure quality fruit at harvest. Four of the most important early seasons tasks are 1) maximizing calcium uptake into the developing fruit, 2) improving fruit size 3) managing terminal growth and 4) managing tree fruit load. Sysstem Cal from Agro-K can improve the performance of the most important PGR tools used for sizing, thinning and managing terminal growth that are critical to maximizing fruit quality and grower profitability. Now you can do all these critical tasks while also supplying systemic calcium during peak demand. T he New Zealand marketer ENZA Limited has obtained a nonexclusive license to market a new pear variety called Velvetine. The pear was bred by Plant and Food Research in New Zealand (formerly HortResearch) and licensed to ENZA by Prevar Limited, an international company that was formed to commercialize new apple and pear cultivars developed by Plant and Food Research. Brian D’Ath, ENZA’s global variety development man- ager, said in a press release that he believes that Velvetine (PremP33 cultivar) will have wide consumer appeal because of its smooth texture, juiciness, and good flavor. When ripe, the pear has a shelf life of more than two weeks. Prevar chose the name Velvetine as a trademark for the pear to reflect its smooth texture. It has a classic European pear shape, and the skin has natural russet over a green background. Brett Ennis, chief executive officer of Prevar, said some consumers might consider the pear unattrac- tive, but market research has shown that the pear’s tex- ture, flavor, and keeping quality when ripe are attributes that consumers value. Lynnell Brandt, president of the Associated Interna- tional Group of Nurseries, which provides quarantine, testing, and international management services to Pre- var, said entities in other parts of the world are also inter- ested in licensing Velvetine, but no decision has been made yet. There would need to be grower interest and also a plan for marketing the pear under a brand name. Although the pear is russeted when grown in New Zealand, it might not be when grown in drier climates like Washington State’s, he said. “We have test trees out now, and we should start seeing fruit as soon as this year, so we’re hoping to make some decisions within a relatively short period of time,” he added. • www.goodfruit.com GOOD FRUIT GROWER JUNE 2011 17 Sysstem-CAL Effect on Apogee and Shoot Growth 35 30 25 20 15 10 5 0 0 wk Check Apogee Apogee + Sysstem-CAL Apples need early season calcium for best quality. Growers want early applications of Apogee® to manage terminal growth, but calcium can be antagonistic to Apogee® . University research 1 wk 3 wk 5 wk 7 wk Trial conducted by Dr. J. Schupp, Penn State - 2009 9 wk 11 wk from WSU, Penn State and UMass as well as private researchers have documented that Sysstem-CAL™ does not interfere with Apogee® allowing it to control terminal growth and help growers manage fire blight more effectively. The unique formulation of Sysstem-CAL links calcium to a highly systemic phosphite. This patent-pending technology provides rapid calcium penetration and translocation into the fruit where calcium is most needed. Sysstem-Cal maximizes calcium and cell wall development, resulting in reduced bitter pit and improved pack-out while maximizing storage and shelf life.
