1987: Detroit Diesel Series 60 BY JOHN BAXTER The Series 60 gave the best fuel economy in the market, long life and dominated the large fl eet market for more than 20 years. It was the fi rst heavy-duty diesel using an overhead camshaft to operate electronic unit injectors directly through rocker levers. Its cylinder head was the fi rst that had a true crossfl ow design with both intake valves on one side, and both exhausts on the other, driven by odd, U-shaped rocker levers. Charles Napier, shown talking into a CB in the January 1977 , and heavyweight champion Sonny Liston, on the cover of the November 1968 issue, co-starred in “Moonfi re.” Richard Egan was the star in a far-fetched intrigue that involves a big rig that is key to the rescue .
