APPS FOR GOLF / PUTTING APPLICATIONS Phil Mickelson, Secrets of the Short Game Cost $5.99 The Phil Mickelson putting app, Secrets of the Short Game, offers insights into one of the great short game masters of the modern era. A flashy intro from Phil sets the scene for this app which includes instruction for putting, chipping, bunker play and his famous flop shot. The ‘Putting’ section includes 3 sub-sections. The first section is titled ‘Putting 1’ which includes Phil’s ‘General Principals of Putting’ and discusses “straight back straight through” vs. “arc stroke”. Phil uses some great analogies, and also discusses the benefits of different putters for different putting styles. Also included in the first section is a video on ‘The Stroke’ in which Phil explains his ‘musts’ when it comes to the stroke. Phil explains his beliefs clearly and the video works well, with written purchased. At a cost of $1.99 these subsections can also be purchased and they include: ‘Putting 2’ - To forward press or Not - Aiming the Putter and - Phil’s Basic Putting Concept ‘Putting 3’ - 3-Foot Circle Drill - 6-Foot Circle Drill - Reading the Putt - Longer Putts – 40,50,60 ft Putting Drills content appearing on the screen, to reinforce his views. Also the videos offer flash cards which can be read, offering a short description of the videos. One of the downsides to the app is the 2nd and 3rd sub- sections on putting titled ‘Putting 2’ and ‘Putting 3’ do not come with the original cost of the app. This also includes other areas of the short game which must be 38 GOLF INFUZION MAGAZINE JULY 2011 The videos are filmed in HD and Phil’s explanations are clear and to the point. I found the app very easy to navigate through and although I don’t agree with all of Phil’s principals I think much can be learnt from this instruction. So for a total cost of $9.95 you will have all the putting instruction at your fingertips. Rating 8/10
