So far it's really paying off. The 389 will always be our bread and butter but you've got to pay attention to fuel econ- omy in this day and age, and the 579 is really delivering. It's no surprise then that the vast majority of the Western fleet is made up of traditionally styled Peterbilt Model 389s, most of which are tricked out with time-tested customizations such as dual stacks, wings and a variety of horns and marker lights. But in this old-school, family-run, performance-focused operation, a couple of new students are drawing the most attention. A pair of new, aerodynamically styled Peterbilt Model 579s, powered by PACCAR MX-13 Engines, has evoked double-takes from customers and drivers alike. Given their history, you can trust that the admission of these high-performing aeros into the fleet is a major change of heart for the president of the versatile carrier. "They're definitely proving their worth," says Guadagni of his Model 579s. "The next test for them will be resale, but we've always had success with the Peterbilt brand in that area. And we're starting to see a lot more cow haulers, ag haulers and ranchers — the markets that have always been there for our classic long hoods — getting into aeros now and tricking them out.
