August 2014 | Construction Equipment Distribution | www.cedmag.com | 63 Workforce Development in Action Don Shilling, president, General Equipment and Supplies in Fargo and past president of The AED Foundation Board of Directors (soon to be AED Chairman in 2015) was also deeply involved in the planning, as was Theresa Keimig, his executive assistant. What's Next? "Our mission is to enhance the success of AED member companies by encour- aging continuous learning, providing educational opportunities for today's employees and improving the quantity and quality of available employees for the future, said Lintow. She says planning for the next AED Instructor Conference will soon be underway, and the event is currently scheduled for June 2016. Part of the planning activities includes a review of conference feedback, which will influence development of the 2016 conference. "We want to listen to the voice of our customers before we make changes," Lintow said. "Because we believe in continuous improvement in our activities, we'll consider ways to make the conference even better. We haven't yet selected a site, but the next conference will be held at a different location." Both Bullock and Anderson expect to take action on information they picked up at the 2014 conference. "I believe we'll look to implement a program like Caterpillar's 'Think BIG,'" Anderson says. "It's designed to give new supervisors needed training before they step into a supervisory role." Think BIG's four-year program devotes approximately half its students' time to technical/academic education and the remainder of the time to on-the-job experience at Caterpillar dealerships. In the second two years, students are placed in full-time apprenticeships at sponsor- ing CAT dealerships for additional on-the-job-training. Bullock picked up ideas about setting up classrooms and labs as well as methods for improving student performance and test scores. "All AED-accredited schools are good schools," Bullock said. "Some have reached beyond good to better, and all of us should have the goal to offer the best possible programs. Bringing industry leaders together to share their perspectives on where the industry and new technologies are headed helps us see trends for future training needs. These confer- ences can help us reach higher levels of performance for our students' benefit. We're looking forward to attending a future event. "No one ever has all the answers," Anderson added. "We'd better be listening to what's going on around us if we want to survive and grow in today's market."
