One goal is to better highlight SMS elements that actually correlate with crash risk, said the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administra- tion. The site also should make it easier for carriers to understand how they can im- prove their scores and easier for others to interpret carrier scores, the agency said. FMCSA said the changes would "clarify the SMS's role as a prioritization tool" for carrier interventions, rather than a carrier scoring system. The changes were to take place Aug. 2 and include: • Moving carriers' rankings in the Behavioral Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories (BASIC) from the front summary page to within the carriers' drilldown pages. Carrier summary pages now will note only whether a car- rier's ranking has put it over the intervention threshold; • Reordering BASIC listings based on crash risk association so that BASICs in which higher rankings actual- ly correlate with higher crash risk are listed at the top; • Highlighting carriers' in- dividual performance trends in each BASIC rather than percentile rankings that rank carriers against one another; • Making available carriers' enforcement case history, which includes the date of closure, any viola- tions and associated fines; • Showing carriers' total number of inspections and the num- ber of inspections with violations; and • Showing carriers' current insur- ance and operating authority status. FMCSA planned three webinars to help carriers and drivers learn more about the changes: Aug. 20, 10 to 11:30 a.m. ET; Aug. 20, 2 to 3 p.m. ET; and Aug. 21, 2 to 3 p.m. ET. — James Jaillet Website changes focus on crash risk
